HISSITANSSI (elevator solo) and HISSITANSSI 2 (another elevator solo) are works I made in collaboration with two dancers, Pia Karaspuro and Päivi Rissanen. I had worked with them on two video works and in several performances and exhibitions before. This time we attempted to study possibilities of seemingly non-virtuosic movement in a small closed space. All was shot without any camera movement. The dancers danced there parts separately and I superimposed one on top of the other while editing, creating two ghostlike transparent characters, quite similar to each other in appearance, dancing in the same space, sensing the other’s presence, but not seeing it.

HISSITANSSI and HISSITANSSI 2 are two versions of the same idea, the former concentrates on slow movement, the latter on fast.

These works, like many of my previous video works too, were inspired by the works of several existential minimalists, from Samuel Beckett to Morton Feldman, and are numbers 3 and 4 in my ongoing video series The Leningrad Essays and Poems.
